Safety Alert – Gun Safety

Hunting season is here. Many enthusiasts are already enjoying dove season. October in many areas starts squirrel and rabbit. Soon it will be primitive weapons deer season in many areas. Let us talk gun and woods safety. There are specific laws in place that dictate to hunters how much hunter orange they have to wear while traveling in the woods, once on the stand, and while traveling out. But what about the family members that are on a weekend hike? What about the kids that are in the woods for the day. With cooler weather coming a lot of persons start to go camping on weekends.

Snakes are still out and with leaves falling they are even harder to see. In the south we have several types of poisonous snakes. You can still suffer from heat stress. Make sure that you drink lots of cool liquids and take water with you when camping, hiking, and or hunting. Even if going for a 5 minute walk in the woods bring water. Always bring a working flashlight in case you run late and it gets dark. If you enter into the woods, make sure that you have some type of high visibility clothing or hat. It does not matter if you are the hunter. Everyone entering the woods at this time of year should have high visibility clothing.

Hunters, make sure that you check your equipment before going hunting. Clean it, oil it, and make sure that it is operating properly and safely. In a safe area such as a gun range, or if you have a controlled environment with a back stop, make sure that your weapon is sighted in properly. Make sure your weapon is unloaded while traveling. Once you reach your destination, recheck your weapon to make sure that there are no barrel obstructions before loading. While traveling to you hunting location, make sure that the barrel is never pointed at anyone. Once at your destination never shoot at anything that you cannot clearly see. Enjoy the outdoors
